ABSTRACT

The ultimate purpose of undertaking this research work was to profoundly examine Nigeria state and University education: Implication for national Development. The central theme of the work was to interrogate how lack of funding is impeding or becoming a barrier to National Development. The objective of the study was to examine how underfunding of the tertiary system is militating against the Development of the country, the theory adopted was Human capital theory developed by G.S Berker, 1991the work critically reviewed that the poor bankrolling or financing of our tertiary institutions has led to incessant ASUU strike, brain drain , dilapidated educational system and funding imputed in education is below the UNESCO 26 percent benchmark and has made Development to be retarded . The methods of research consist of Descriptive research design , data was sourced qualitatively and the analysis was presented in a historical descriptive method. The study therefor recommends amongst other things that The Government should increase and maintain a steady injection of huge and behemoth or huge funds to the academic system especially universities so as to upgrade the system and bring it at parity with respect to standards with other educational systems in the world The underlying problems that are into ASUU strike should be thoroughly addressed one of such is the deplorable rate of underfunding of the tertiary institutions of learning in the country hence funds should be channel to the sector In such a way and manner that will propel Development. The required facilities needed in. Our institutions of learning should be adequately provided in such a way and manner that that educators who have migrated to diaspora or overseas will be tempted to return back to the country. The Federal government should attach appropriate political will to the Development of tertiary institutions by constantly injecting more funds when the need arise agreement and undertaking and memorandum of understanding between Federal government and ASUU should be honoured and implemented to the latter because no amount of fund pumped into education is a water or flagrant disposal of resources The autonomy of tertiary institutions of learning should be respected by the federal government. Schools should maintain their independence with respect to their internal administration without government meddling .this is to limit mediocrity and to promote meritocracy in our citadels of learning
