The University of Waikato came into existence in 1964 after a group of Hamilton locals determined to have a university in their city intensely lobbied. The public higher institution is located in Hamilton, New Zealand. It is internationally recognized for its excellence across the arts, humanities, and social sciences. The wide range of programs in the Arts field includes world-class facilities for opera, music, and performance.
University of Waikato Vice Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarships are fully funded and specifically for international students. Financial aid is provided to those undertaking undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs.
The Vice-Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarship was established in 2015 to promote educational opportunities and support talented applicants enrolling in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate programs for the first time at the University of Waikato.
Applications for the 2024/2025 International Excellence Scholarships at Waikato are currently open to students from countries around the world. The financial aid covers tuition fees and has a value of up to NZD$ 15,000 for bachelor’s and master’s students. At the same time, the PhD Scholarship value is as much as NZ$30,000 per year. This financial aid is tenable only within the year it is awarded and will be awarded to applicants who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement.
Tuition Fees
Bachelors students at the University of Waikato typically pay tuition fees between NZD$30,897 and NZD$40,220. The tuition fees for master’s programs are approximate and subject to change. However, they are usually between NZD$56,548 and NZD$88,200.
New international PhD students studying full-time at the University of Waikato would pay an average tuition of NZD$18,847 to NZD$48,042. Domestic students in New Zealand may be eligible to pay an annual tuition fee of about NZD$7,140 to NZD$7,582.
Eligibility Criteria
You must fulfill these requirements to be qualified for the University of Waikato Vice Chancellor’s International Excellence Scholarships.
- You must be applying to enroll full-time as a new international student at the University of Waikato in an undergraduate or postgraduate program.
- You must have received a conditional or unconditional place offer from the University of Waikato. This includes a pathway offer for a degree packaged with any of the following;
- Certificate of Attainment in English Language
- Certificate of Attainment in Foundation Studies
- Certificate of University Preparation; International Diploma (Business); International Diploma (Computer Science) or
- Diploma of Postgraduate Preparation (Pre-Masters) at the University of Waikato
- To gain entrance to the University of Waikato, you must have a minimum GPA equivalency of B+ in the qualification.
- You should not be enrolled in any undergraduate or postgraduate program at the University of Waikato.
- You should not have paid fees at the time of application.
- You should not be coming to the University of Waikato through a sponsoring body.
- You should not come to the University of Waikato on a Guaranteed Credit Arrangement or through a study abroad or student exchange agreement.

Scholarship Benefits
Undergraduate beneficiaries of the scholarship will receive aid between $2,500 and $15,000, and they have been broken down as follows;
- One-year tenure: between $2,500 and $8,000 applied to tuition fees in the first year.
- Two years’ tenure: between $2,500 and $12,000, with no more than $8,000 in the first year of study and no more than $4,000 in the second year.
- Three years tenure: between $2,500 and $15,000, with no more than $8,000 in their first year of study, no more than $4,000 in year two, and no more than $3,000 in year three of study.
Beneficiaries at the Postgraduate level will receive between $2,500 and $15,000, which will be applied to one or more years of the recipient’s postgraduate study. The program funding will be applied directly to the recipient’s tuition fees for the agreed program of study either at the time of enrolment or after completion.

As part of the application process, applicants must:
- Upload their conditional or unconditional offer of place from the University of Waikato.
- Apply through the online portal.
- During the application, provide specific details when explaining why you want to study at the University of Waikato and how you will be a global ambassador for the institution.
- Applications can be submitted at any time, and decisions are normally made within 8 to 12 weeks of the submission date.
- However, interested candidates should know that applications may not be considered if received within 4 weeks of the start of each of the university’s three primary trimesters (A, B, and C Trimesters).
