The University of Essex, located in Essex, United Kingdom, was established in 1963 and received its Royal Charter in 1965. The higher institution comprises three campuses in the county.

The annual University of Essex Scholarship is awarded to talented students from Africa to pursue undergraduate programs at a top-notch British university. International candidates selected to benefit from the financial aid must be from a member state of the African Union and are self-funding.

Tuition Fees

The cost of studying at the University of Essex varies depending on whether it is undergraduate, graduate, or short-degree courses. It is also different for domestic and international students in the fields of art, Drama, English, and Science. Tuition fees for students enrolled in courses start from £20,475 and go up to £30,275. The cost of study at the tertiary institution includes not just tuition fees but also other living expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must meet the following conditions:

  • Students who are overseas fee payers and entirely self-funded are eligible.
  • Students must ordinarily be residents of a member country of the African Union.
  • Students must admitted for the first year of a full-time undergraduate degree at the University of Essex.
  • UCAS applicants must actively make Essex their firm choice by 12 July 2025.
  • Applicants that become firm with Essex through rejection by their original firm choice selection elsewhere are not eligible. Direct Applicants must accept their offer by 12 July 2025.
  • The award cannot be held with any other University of Essex scholarships.
  • Successful applicants should be available for promotional activities.
  • Students receiving a repayable loan to fund their studies will be considered self-funded.

Scholarship Benefits

The University of Essex provides financial aid to African students in the form of a discount on the first year’s tuition fee. The scholarship recipients will be awarded a grant of £6,000 for Year 1 of undergraduate studies at the higher institution.

Application Procedure

  • Apply for undergraduate admission to any available programs at the University of Essex.
  • You will automatically be considered for this award if you meet all the eligibility criteria. You don’t need to complete an application form.
  • The University will assess your eligibility based on your country of domicile and fee status, which you submitted on your application for a place in Essex.
