Sweden was one of the few European countries that allowed international students across different levels of study to obtain degrees for free, but this changed in 2010. With the new law passed by the Swedish Government, students from non-EU/EEA countries started being charged tuition and application fees, but Swedish Scholarship Programs subsidized them.
There are a range of scholarship programs available in Sweden, and some Universities offer them as tuition waivers for international students on a competitive basis. Scholarships vary depending on the university’s criteria, sponsor, and selection process.
In this article, Booklab24 will list 9 Scholarships, Grants, and Fellowships that international students can access to study in Sweden.
1. Lund University Global Scholarship
The Lund University Global Scholarship Programme offers aid through a competitive, selective, and merit-based system. This prestigious award is designed to support outstanding students from outside the European Union/European Economic Area.
Scholarship Benefits: The scholarship covers 25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent, or 100% of the tuition fee. Over €1.6 million/US $2.1 million is awarded in Lund Scholarship grants annually.
2. Swedish Institute
Swedish Institute Management Programme (SIMP) Africa For Young African Leaders
The government-run Swedish Institute receives funding every year for scholarships to a select group of foreign nationals. SIMP Africa, which is partly funded by the Swedish Government, targets emerging leaders from developing and underdeveloped nations.
The immersive curriculum centers on business-related problem-solving, seminars, and meetings with commercial, political, and cultural industry captains. Successful candidates also receive on-site company visits.
Scholarship Benefits: Financial aid covers the cost of training and content, accommodation, feeding, and transportation during the program.
3. Uppsala Global scholarship
Outstanding students from non-EU/EEA countries who wish to pursue a Master’s program at Uppsala University are the target audience for the Uppsala University Global Scholarships.
The scholarship program is highly competitive, and successful candidates will be selected based on their academic achievements, leadership potential, and commitment to contributing to the Uppsala University community.
Scholarship Benefits: Master’s students will receive financial aid to cover full tuition fees but not living expenses. The complete tuition waiver will last for one year.
4. Chalmers IPOET scholarships
The IPOET Scholarships offered by Chalmers University are available to students applying for Master’s programs. Eligible candidates are selected based on academic achievements, leadership qualities, and potential to contribute to the Chalmers community.
Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, offers about 50 IPOET scholarships every year, and the Swedish Council for Higher Education funds the program.
Scholarship Benefits: It provides a 75 percent reduction in tuition fees (4 semesters/2 year program). Students who excel during their first year of studies may receive an increased scholarship reduction, which covers 85 percent of the tuition fee during their second and final year.
5. Karlstad University Global Scholarship
High-flying academic students from countries outside Europe are the recipients of the Karlstad University Global Scholarships program. The scheme awards partly or fully funded scholarships to cover tuition fees. The scholarship offer is only valid for the year it was awarded and the program stipulated in the scholarship notification.
Scholarship Benefits: It covers between 25 percent and 100 percent of the tuition fees but does not include housing costs. The scholarship value is deducted from the program’s tuition fees for which you were granted admission.
6. Mälardalen University Scholarship Programme
Prospective Master’s students applying to study at Mälardalen University, Sweden, are offered financial aid for the duration of the MSc program. However, the number of beneficiaries per year is limited, but they must be outstanding international students. The scholarship is not open for students from the twelve countries with which Sweden has long-term development cooperation (Bangladesh, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia).
Scholarship Benefits: The scholarship will cover 100 percent of the tuition fee and will remain so as long as you maintain a minimum of 22.5 credits per semester and a minimum of 45 credits per academic year). The financial aid does not include living expenses.
7. Umeå University Scholarships
Umeå University in Sweden provides a fully funded scholarship every year in conjunction with the Autumn term admission. It is open to academically talented and high-achieving students from countries outside Europe. The selection criteria are based on the student’s academic achievements and leadership potential, and the scholarship is usually awarded to 42 lucky applicants.
Scholarship Benefits: The Umeå University Scholarship provides a full 100 percent or partial waiver of the tuition fee.
8. University of Skövde Master’s scholarship
The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) sponsors scholarships for students undertaking a Master’s program at the University of Skövde. After approval, the scholarship amount will be automatically deducted from the tuition fee. This financial aid is provided for one academic semester.
Scholarship Benefits: The University of Skövde Master’s scholarship has partial waivers (50 percent of the tuition fee).
9. Halmstad University scholarships
Halmstad University provides scholarships for qualified students from countries outside of EU/EEA and Switzerland. The university awards scholarships based on academic excellence and potential contributions to the Halmstad University community.
Scholarship Benefits: Halmstad University scholarships cover 25 percent or 50 percent of the tuition fee for Master’s Programs in all fields of study.
