If you are looking for a country in Asia to study, live, or work in, Malaysia should be among the top three places you should consider. Malaysia is one of the choice destinations for African students who intend to pursue an undergraduate or graduate course, and there are good reasons for this.
Malaysia offers scholarships to international students through the Ministry of Education and some popular universities. With educational benefits that rival those of the United Kingdom and the United States and less strict immigration policies, Malaysia has become home to more than 35,000 international students from 144 developing countries.
The various scholarships typically last 12-24 months and are offered by the following five higher education institutions, which Booklab24 will highlight.
1. Universiti Putra Malaysia
Research Scholarships for Graduates
Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), formerly known as Universiti Pertanian Malaysia, is one of Malaysia’s leading research universities. Founded in 1931 as the Faculty of Agriculture, the university offers bachelor’s and master’s degree programs focusing on agricultural science and related fields. UPM offers semester-based programs and accepts applications in June, September, and February (depending on the program).
Around 4,524 international students are enrolled in UPM’s bachelor’s and master’s programs, and 85% of graduates are employable. Putra Business School is accredited by the Advance Collegiate School of Business (AACSB); only 5% of business programs worldwide have this accreditation.
Putra University is one of seven universities selected for the Melbourne-Malaysia Split Doctoral Partnership sponsored by the Malaysian government. For the entire program, students will pay an average of RM24,550 to RM2,00,000 in tuition fees.
2. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia
Universiti Teknologi Malaysia is known for its innovation-driven entrepreneurship research in engineering, science, and technology. The university, located in Skudai, Johar, awards International Doctoral Scholarships and has around 24,704 undergraduate and master’s students, of which 4,912 are from over 75 countries.
Benefits
Kuala Lumpur, Johar Bahru and Pagoh, offer courses primarily in the fields of Engineering, Environment, Science and Humanities, Business and Geography. Tuition fees for most undergraduate courses range from RM51,620 to RM75,000, while tuition fees for most postgraduate courses are RM10,660.
3. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia
UKM Vice-Chancellor Scholarship
Universiti Kebangsaan is the largest university in Malaysia. This higher institution offers UKM Vice-Chancellor Scholarship to international students studying in Malaysia. Students who wish to proceed to postgraduate or doctoral studies are encouraged to apply. This UKM Vice Chancellor Scholarship program covers tuition fees, registration fees and dissertation fees for the entire duration of the course.
4. UCSI University
UCSI University Trust Graduate Scholarships provides funding to international students in broad areas of study. It is one of Malaysia’s leading private universities with four well-equipped campuses. UCSI was ranked among the top 350 in the world in the 2022 QS World Rankings.
Admission to UCSI is three semesters, with applications for most programs being accepted in January, May, and September. Each university site has auditoriums, seminar rooms, laboratories, libraries, cafeterias, and internet. The institute also offers on-campus housing options to its students.

Studying at UCSI will cost you a total tuition fee ranging from RM24,810 to RM429,500, depending on the program. 5. University of Nottingham Malaysia
The University of Nottingham Malaysia (UNMC) offers the same degrees offered by the University of Nottingham in the UK, and all courses are taught in English. The university has excellent teaching, training, and research facilities, including a well-equipped teaching system, library, dedicated study rooms and computers, language, science, and engineering laboratories, and online and virtual laboratories.
UNMC is ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide. It is ranked at level 5 on a scale of 1 to 6 and rated as “Excellent” by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia. As a research-intensive university, UNMC focuses on research in nanotechnology, renewable energy, communication and culture, sustainable crops, business productivity, and innovation.
The scholarship is provided by Ministry of Education, Malaysia for international students to study masters program in Malaysia. More than 34,500 Participants from 144 Developing countries have benefited from the same. The duration os the scolarships is 12-24 months and is accepted by pubmic or private universities in Malaysia.
Eligibility Criteria
For the Master’s Degree Program, applicants should obtain a minimum of Second Class Upper (Honours) or a minimum CGPA of 3.0 at the Undergraduate Degree level.
Scholars must undertake full-time study for postgraduate programs at the selected Higher Learning Institutions.
Proof of English Language Proficiency, such as IELTS (minimum total score 6.0), the TOEFL paper-based test with a score of 500, or an internet-based test with a score of 60.
