Saitama University (SU), established in 1949, is located in a suburban area of Sakura-ku, Saitama City in Tokyo, Japan. Three higher institutions, Saitama Normal School, Urawa Higher School, and Saitama Youth Normal School, merged to form Saitama University.
The 2025 Saitama University MEXT Scholarship is available for all international students who want to pursue their PhD Degree in Japan. It is a fully funded scholarship that will cover study expenses and last for three years.
Tuition fees
The tuition fees for graduate programs at Japanese universities are typically between 500,000 and 1,500,000 yen per year. However, at Saitama University, the tuition fee for PhD program is 535,800 yen per year for privately funded students.
Eligibility Criteria
To be qualified for the MEXT PhD Scholarship at Saitama University:
- You must have or expect to have a Master’s Degree before enrollment.
- You must be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with the Japanese Government.
- You must be under 35 as of April 1, 2025.
- Applicants must have excellent academic achievements.
- Candidates should be in both good mental and physical health.
- Candidates must reside outside Japan at the time of application and not be holders of Japanese nationality.
- You must be able to arrive in Japan by the end of September 2025 on a date designated by Saitama University.
- Not an awardee of the Japanese Government Scholarship during the last three years
- Have proof of English language proficiency.

Scholarship Benefits
Saitama University MEXT Scholarship is fully funded, so it will cover full tuition fees and provide a stipend of 145,000 yen per month. There will also be a regional allowance of 3,000 yen and round-trip airfare between the applicant’s home country and Japan.
