ABSTRACT

The use of slang among youth is a widespread phenomenon that has attracted attention due to its potential implications on various aspects of society, including crime prevention. This study focuses on understanding the use of slang by the youth population and its specific implications on crime prevention in Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The objectives of this research are to examine the prevalence and patterns of slang usage among youth in the university, identify the factors influencing the adoption of slang, explore the perception of slang by law enforcement agencies and campus security, and assess the potential effects of slang on crime prevention strategies within the university environment. To accomplish these objectives, Surveys was administered to a representative sample of students to gather quantitative data on the frequency, types, and contexts of slang usage. The findings of this study revealed a deeper understanding of the relationship between slang usage and crime prevention in the university setting. The results shed light on the socio-cultural factors that drive the adoption and propagation of slang among youth, as well as its potential impact on crime rates and prevention efforts. The study provided valuable insights and recommendations for university authorities, law enforcement agencies, and relevant stakeholders to develop effective strategies and policies that address the implications of slang in crime prevention within the university community.
