ABSTRACT

This study examined the influence of the five factor model of personality on smoking initiation among youths in Ekpoma. One hundred and ten youths (110) in Ekpoma took part in the research. Questionnaires were used in collecting data that were analyzed in this study. One out of the three hypotheses was supported. Hypothesis 1, which stated that there will be main and interaction effect of Neuroticism and Extraversion on smoking initiation among youth in Ekpoma was  partially confirmed from the result, it was found that there was main significant influence of extraversion (F(1,110) = 4.976, P < .05) on smoking initiation leaving Neuroticism and the interaction effect unconfirmed. Hypothesis 2, which stated that there will be main and interaction effect of openness to experience and agreeableness on smoking initiation was not confirmed as predicted. Hypothesis 3, which stated that there will be a significant effect of conscientiousness on smoking initiation who also not confirmed as predicted.

The results of the findings were explained and necessary recommendations made too.
