ABSTRACT

This study aimed at investigating the influence of digital Divide on the academic performance of students in computer science courses in Ignatius Ajuru university of education in Rumuolumeni Portharcourt. The research design adopted for this study was descriptive survey design. The population of the study consists of the level 400 students in
computer science department in Ignatius Ajuru University of education Rumuolumeni. The level 400 students have a population of four hundred students (400). Out of the 400 students selected, 200 were sampled using the Taro Yamenes technique. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire made up of twenty-five (25) items on digital divide and was validated by experts. The reliability of the instrument was established using observation and test-retest method. The data collected were analysed using mean. The hypotheses were tested using Chi-Square. The findings of this study revealed that there is a significant relationship between the variables of digital divide such as parental background, Student‘s educational background, technological skill, student‘s residence on the academic performance of student. The study concluded that there is a direct relationship between access to technology, skills and students‘ academic performance. This study recommended among others that: Ignatius Ajuru University should inculcate an environment where students can make use of computer systems both in class lectures and writing of examinations.
