Background of the Study

Over the years, various form of crimes have been witnessed the in Nigerian tertiary institution ranging from examination malpractice, falsification of admission, rape, stealing, sexual abuse and cultism among others. But in recent time, a new form of crime now exists in our tertiary institutions. The commission of cyber crime among students in tertiary institution, The Polytechnic, Ibadan inclusive, has been discovered to have grievous consequences on the students, the school and the society at large. Students who have been blinded by the sudden and unexpected as affluence become deviant and arrogantly disrespectful to their lecturers, non-teaching staff and sometimes by flagrantly confront the management all of which have impacted adversely on their academic.

Olaide and Adewale (2016) observed that despite the sizeable number of perpetrators of cybercrime are youth who have discovered different ways of using the internet in doing different types of criminal activities and many in these blankets are students in tertiary institution. Many of these students spend majority of their time on the internet trying to scam people online having little or no time to study. In addition, while they stay all night chatting and communicating with potential victims, many of them missed classes, assignments given and sometimes semester test. Many of the students depend on either examination malpractice or bribe in their way to achieve grades in examination. The student’s commitment to learning is also serious affected as most of them have gotten money.
