  1. Background of the Study

A worker of an organization like other human beings of the world has their individual aspirations, dreams and visions. These constitute the bugle that wake up the average Nigerian very early in the morning and provide for him the drive to vigorously pursue the challenge of life through the day. As it were, it goes without saying that for Nigerians to be able to achieve and actualize their dreams, aspirations and vision, the environment has to be right and conducive for fulfillment of such desires. In other words, the socio-economic and political machines that combine to bring them into reality are found in the large society. Little wonder the saying that “no man is an island unto himself.

Until very recently, the larger society, which is a agrarian, suddenly experienced oil boom with the resulting wealth not properly channeled. In the era of oil boom in the country, government paid little or no attention to agriculture, consequently agriculture was not considered as a source of revenue to the government as they combined to make inadequate budgetary provision for the revitalization In general people leave the village for the city for better means of livelihood. This phenomenon often leads to urban congestion, rampant stealing and continued rise in the price of scarce food items. It is rather unfortunate that, things are getting from bad to worse every day for Nigerians. It is more unfortunate that all efforts being made by the government to solve the problems have met with very little success. It is in an attempt to solve this acute problem of food shortage the Federal Government of Nigeria came up with various policy statements which among others, includes the establishment of the Federal Agricultural Coordinator Unit (FACU) in 1981 which later metamorphosed into Projects Coordinating Unit (PCU) in 2005 due to the scrapping of FACU and ARMED owing to policy inconsistencies in the country occasioned by political changes. These policy changes often adversely affect existing organization, and PCU is no exception, indicating a need for this research.

The project work “Impact of Training Programmes in an Organization; A Cass Study of Projects Coordinating Unit (PCU), Kaduna” is to show a well developed and trained workforce and bring about advancement in the organization positively and also enhance industrial peace and harmony. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, training is the transfer of effort of having learned one activity or individual’s execution of other activities. There are generally three types of training such as positive training, negative training and zero (neutral) training.

Although few organizations in Nigeria have career development programmes, most big organizations mostly have management development programmes. Career development programmes encourage employees to keep up-to-date by taking courses at universities or short courses offered by Professional associations, both on-the-job and off-the-jobs approaches are used in the development of employee’s career.

The research work is aimed among others at finding how staff have been motivated at finding how staff have been motivated through training programme as well as showing the impact and constraints by staff experienced of PCU in the area of staff development and training job performance and skill acquisition.
