ABSTRACT

This research work examines the use of imagery and symbolism in Igbo birth songs with samples from Mbaise. While using the primary data of qualitative methodology through fieldwork, this work has scholarly understudy the role of oral literature in the academic having been given little attention as a discipline, specifically, imagery and symbolism in birth songs. This work is carried out in five chapters. The first chapter provides the background information of the work. The second chapter reviews the literature related to the study. The third and fourth chapters analyzes the use of imagery and symbols respectively in Mbaise birth songs while the last chapter serves as the summary, conclusion and the researcher’s contributions to knowledge.
