ABSTRACT

This study examined gender differences and mathematics achievement of rural secondary students in Ogun state. The sample for this study was made up of 350 randomly selected from five senior secondary schools. The sampling technique used in this study was stratified and simple random sampling. The instrument for data collection titled “Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) in rural Area” was developed, validated and administered on the participants. The reliability of the instrument using Cronbach alpha coefficient was 0.782. Four hypotheses were tested. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Independent t-test at p<0.05. Results of the findings revealed that there is significant difference in the performance of Students of Mathematics based on gender. It was also discovered that there is significant difference between boarding and day students’ performance in rural Areas of Ogun-state.

Also, findings also show that there is significant difference between private schools and public school student performance in rural Areas of Ogun state. The study recommended among others that government should provide Social amenities in rural areas so that it can attract teachers posted to their schools.
