ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to ascertain the effects of reality therapy technique on reading comprehension skills of widows in widowhood vocational center Mangu. Widows faced emotional breakdown after the demised of their spouses hence the need for reality therapy technique to help in stabilizing them emotionally. In vocational institution, little or no therapy is given to widows by teachers and instructors. Widows benefited from the outcome of this study because they became better informed about the effects of reality therapy techniques on reading comprehension and how it affects their academic performance. The objective of the study was to determine the extent to which reality therapy technique can enhance the reading comprehension skills of widows after exposure to reality therapy technique. Quasi experimental research design was adopted for the study; specifically, pretest-posttest control group design was used. The population of the study consist of all the eighty-one (81) widows in the vocational center. Sample size of the research was thirty (30) and simple random sampling technique was used to select 15 widows in the experimental group and 15 widows in the control group. Data for the research was collected through the administration of pretest on the experimental and the control group. After the pretest, the experimental group were exposed to reality therapy techniques while the control group were not exposed to reality therapy techniques. All the research question was answered using simple percentage. The hypothesis was tested using t-test for independent and dependent sample at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that reality therapy improved the reading comprehension skills of widows significantly as shown in the performance of the experimental group who were exposed to the therapy as against widows in the control group who were not exposed. This indicate that reality therapy has significant effects on reading comprehension skills of widows. It is therefore, recommended that reality therapy should be included in the reading program of widowhood vocational centers.
