ABSTRACT

This research work investigated the effect of computer assisted instructions on skills acquisition and creativity in cartography among undergraduate geography students in Katsina state. The study developed two objectives namely; identifying the role of CAI on skills acquisition and creativity in cartography among geography student in Katsina state, and examining the role of CAI on creativity in cartography of male and female in Katsina state. Two research questions were used and answered and two hypothesis were tested at P<0.05 The study used descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised of all the degree awarding institutions of Katsina state. Out of this, samples of eighty (80) respondents were selected for this study using random sampling technique. The main instruments for data collection were cartography creativity and skills acquisition questionnaire in form of strongly agreed, agreed, undecided, disagreed, and strongly disagreed. Descriptive statistic of mean and standard deviation were used to answer research questions while t-test statistical tool was used to test the hypotheses at P<0.05 significance level. The result of the study indicated a significant effect of the use of computer assisted instructions on the teaching of cartography as the mean score of experimental group than the control group. Similarly, it was revealed that students taught using computer assisted instructions acquire more skills than those who were taught using lecture method. However, students taught with computer assisted instructions exhibited high creativity in cartography than their counterparts in the controlled group. To this end, the study recommends that the use of computer assisted instructions should be used in the teaching and learning of cartography in degree awarding institutions.
