ABSTRACT
The effect of school environmental factor and its effects on students’ academic performance remains a major concern in Nigerian Universities, particularly students of AE-FUNAI. Many students have fallen victim to the consequences associated with poor school environment. The purpose of this study was to examine effect of school environment on academic performance of students in Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, which is the study area. This study was guided by a descriptive survey research design. The sample size was 400 subjects. School environment are the physical components of the school, and academic performance was measured by grade point average. Data was analyzed with Pearson correlation coefficients using the SPSS analytical software. The findings revealed that majority of the respondents accepted that students who feel safe, cared for and supported have high academic performance. Majority of the respondents accepted that students who do feel secured in a school environment perform well in their academics. Also, Majority of the respondents rejected that good library facilities will aid students learning and improve academic performance. The data collected was analyzed using a frequency and simple percentage, and Chi-square was used to analyze the hypotheses of differences. The findings show that there is significant difference between school physical facilities and academic performance of students in AE-FUNAI. Based on the findings, recommendations were made on campaigns against poor school environment. The findings of this study provided some measures by which school environment can be improved so as to increase the academic performance of students in AE-FUNAI. Among the ways posited are; and other education stakeholders should make concerted efforts to provide adequate classroom building and renovate the existing dilapidated structures in schools, AE-FUNAI library should be well-equipped with current books and be made a world standard library.
