ABSTRACT

Bay leaf, (Laurus nobilis) is a native plant and is one of the most frequently used cooking spices. The dry Bay leaves are used to treat several digestive problems with anticonvulsive, narcotic and antibacterial propertives. In this study the bioactive compound composition of the ethanol, chloroform and ethyl acetate fractions of Bay leaf was investigated using standard method. The result show that the different fractions contained the bioactive components in different amount. The fractions of ethanol, chloroform and ethyl acetate in phenol are (130.89mgGAE/g), (60.11mgGAE/g) and (120.93mg/GAE/g). The fractions of
ethanol, chloroform and ethyl acetate in flavonoid are (220.33mgCE/g), (130.99mgCE/g) and (170.18mgCE/g). The fractions of ethanol, chloroform and ethyl acetate in lycopene are (394.3mg/g), (2.0mg/g) and (1.2mg/g). The fractions of ethanol, chloroform and ethyl acetate in betacarotene are (623.8mg/g), (7.4mg/g) and (4.8mg/g). The fractions of chloroform and ethyl acetate in ascorbic acid are (10.00AAE/g) and (0.45AAE/g). Ethanol fraction was not detected. In conclusion, the ethanol fraction result can be further used in the management and prevention of degenerative diseases.
