ABSTRACT

Antioxidants play an important role in chronic disease prevention, because they might be able to prevent oxidative damage caused by reactive oxidant species to vital biomolecules such as lipids and proteins. In this study, ethanol extract of Mucuna prurien leaf was analyzed for in-vitro total antioxidant properties. The antioxidants parameters investigated were DPPH radical scavenging activity, Reducing Power Capacity and Inhibition of Lipid peroxidation. The result obtained showed that the highest scavenging activity was observed at high concentration of 1000ug/ml with EC50 (62.42mcg/ml) compared to the BHA standard lower activity with EC50 (71.31mcg/ml). The Reducing Power Assay shows that the extract exhibited highest reducing power at concentration of 1000ug/ml. The extract was also observed to exhibits Inhibition of Lipid peroxidation with an IC50 (554.99mcg/ml). The extract demonstrated scavenging activity, indicating its potential as a potent antioxidant. Additionally, the extract exhibited lipid peroxidation, suggesting its ability to mitigate oxidative damage in biological systems. Furthermore, the Reducing Power Assay showed activity which signifies the extract’s ability to donate electrons and reduce oxidized species. These findings highlight the extract’s promising bioactive properties, which could be further explored for potential applications in the field of natural antioxidants and therapeutic interventions targeting oxidative stress-related disorders.
