Appraisal of Material Management on Site

ABSTRACT

Material management control has become very vital to achieve good value during construction in Nigeria. All aspect of activities has to, one way or the other, achieve value in construction industry. Construction that represents one of the mainstays of the country’s economy in terms of job creation, employment opportunity and creation of wealth is no exception. The optimum management and deployment of resources for these activities can be taken as a cardinal means by which economic transformation can be achieved. The aim of this project is to determine how to make resource conservation through minimization of construction material waste serve as a central contributor to economic transformation during construction. The project adopted structured questionnaires to collect data. The mean statistics was used to analyse the data. The decision taken was based on 4 point Linkert Scale rating. It was found that all the contributory factors are waste creation on construction sites in Nigeria. The project concluded that there is need to reduce material waste by avoiding poor planning and organization, transportation and delivery, poor storage and carelessness during handling. Adequate planning should be put in place at every stage of construction work, this will go a long way to avoid over ordering of materials, delay in material delivery and wrong acquisition of materials.
