ABSTRACT

Kalanchoe pinnata is a perennial herb. This species is popularly known in india, Brazil and other parts of the world, it is widely used to treat diarrhea, vomiting, burns, and insect bites. It has been used in folk medicine for treatment of gastric ulcers. This study sought to investigate the effect of ethanol extract of Kalanchoe pinnata on indomethacin-induced ulcerative Wister albino rats. To evaluate anti-ulcer activity. indomethacin induced ulcerative lesion was created in Wister albino rats. They were treated at different doses of (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight). The ethanol leaves extract of Kalanchoe pinnata were administered orally during experiment. The results on the figure 4.1 showed a marked decline in the number of ulcer after treatment with 400 mg/kg extracts even though there was no statistically significant difference (p>0.05) when compared with other groups. The result from figure 4. 2 reveal that there was a slight increase in the pH of the group treated with 200 mg/kg dose even though there was it was not statistically significant when compared with negative control. This indicated that response to pH increase while trying to relieve the inflammation due to HCL of the stomach is dependent on dosage. Generally, the results from the research suggested that the leaves of Kalanchoe pinnata possess relatively anti-ulcer properties in support of the scientific basis of using the leaves in the treatment of ulcer traditionally even though it cannot be completely relied on for effective treatment of ulcerative lesion.
