ABSTRACT

The study focused on the analysis of NGOs in democratic governance in Nigeria. Specifically, the study focused on to ascertain the role of NGOs in democratic governance in Nigeria, and to examine the contribution of NGOs towards corruption in Nigeria. The study is based on the liberal theory  and social contract theory of civil society holds that the existence of civil society is highly imperative in a democratic society because it promotes freedom, equality, tolerance, accountability and progress. The study design used in this research is descriptive survey design. The source of data collection for this study is both primary and secondary data. The target populations for this study are selected experts in politics such as political analyst, political appointees and political scientists from Niger Delta University (NDU). The data collected will be analyzed using quantitatively using simple percentage. The results of the analysis show that NGOs plays a major role in democratic governance in Nigeria., also the result revealed that there is contribution of the NGOs towards corruption in Nigeria. The study concludes that it is through the efforts of the advocacy groups that the political and human rights situation in Nigeria became a subject of international concern. Again, to a large extent, the pro-democracy movement provided the required leadership for the struggle for restoration of democratic rule in the country. It is recommended that they should forge collaboration among themselves. This would enable them to forge common front against anti-democratic forces in the society.
