An Examination of the Role Of Aesthetics in Technological Development in Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study is an examination of the role of aesthetics in technological development in Nigeria. Technological development in Nigeria is seen to be very insignificant. There is presently no commitment to the development of technology in Nigeria and the government has not done much to develop science and technology in the country. One can argue that aesthetics and technologyare mutually exclusive, meaning that both complement each other, contrary to the general belief that there is nothing like technology in aesthetics or vice versa. Thus, since technology could be defined as a systematic means of making things to help humans change or manipulate their environment to their advantages. There is always a design or element of beauty to aid these technologies. This study looks at the thin line between aesthetics and technology and also brings out the fact that without aesthetics, there will be no technology. It reveals the challenges that are facing Nigerian technological development. The study concludes that aesthetics plays a significant role to technological development in Nigeria, this is because aesthetics and creativity, which can lead to technological development. Our approach in this work will be analytical and speculative in line with the philosophical tradition.
