ABSTRACT

This study focuses on the cultural values of Oghara people especially the Iyerin festival of Oghara. This study aims at showcasing the different cultural values of Oghara to the world. This research work is divided into five chapters. Chapter one is an introduction to the research work including the background to the study, statement of the problem, research questions, objectives of the study, significance of the study, scope of the study, methodology, definition of terms and limitations to the study. In chapter two, related literature to the study is reviewed. These include definition of aesthetics, history of aesthetics, the nature of culture, cultures of the Niger Delta people, meaning of festival, origin of festival and types of festivals. Chapter three consists of the result of the interviews carried on a representative number of Oghara descent concerning the origin of Oghara, occupation of Oghara, organizational structure of Oghara, Oghara traditional chieftaincy institution, Iyerin festival of Oghara people and the aesthetic concepts of the Iyerin festival of Oghara people. chapter four focuses on the discussion of observation and findings made during the course of researching for this work. They include, observation I (The festival), Observation II (The Performance), Observation III (Stage) and Observation IV (Poor Participation). Chapter five contains the summary, recommendations for future research and conclusion.
