ABSTRACT

The use of herbal medicine to cure human ailments has been in practice since time immemorial. In Africa, traditionally, Garcinia kola is used to manage and treat cancer, diabetes, malaria, analgesics, hypertension, and other numerous aliments. Similarly, Ocimum gratissimum (clove basil) is used in the treatment of various diseases such as diabetes, cancer, inflammation, aneamia, diarrhea, pains, fungal and bacterial infections. This review uses Lorke’s method of 1983 and it is aimed at comprehensively updating relevant information regarding the pharmacological potential, the therapeutic doses and the acute toxicity of Garcinia kola, Ocimum gratissimum and their combination. Hence, from these studies its known that Ocimium gratisimium, Garcinial kola and their combination are not highly toxic when used in human disease treatment. Conclusively, due to the different phytochemical constituents of these plants, their therapeutic effect is highly proficient when used in combination to ameliorate the effects of many human diseases.
