The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London is a public research university in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1916, and its campus is located in the Bloomsbury area of London, England. SOAS is a member institution of the Federal University of London. SOAS University of London offers world-class degrees in Arts, Law, Economics, Politics, Finance and Management, Development Studies, and Languages and Cultures.
Mo Ibrahim Foundation, through the Governance for Development in Africa Initiative, sponsors the scholarship program at SOAS. This program covers total tuition fees for African students pursuing master’s/doctorate programs at the esteemed university in the United Kingdom.
The Centre of African Studies at SOAS, University of London, extended the funding program for another three years, and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation generously provides scholarships valued at £5,000 every year for African students undertaking a full-time PhD and Master’s program in Governance for Development in Africa.
Tuition Fees
Pursuing an undergraduate program at the SOAS University of London comes with different costs for domestic and international students. The tuition fees that students pay at the UK institution range between $22,660 and $28,850, depending on the student’s nationality and program.
SOAS University of London offers 350 bachelor’s degree programs, over 100 one-year master’s degree programs, and doctorate programs in nearly every department.
Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must be domiciled (or permanent residents) in an African country.
- Preference will be given to scholarship candidates living in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Once the place is secured, the applicants can apply for the scholarship.
- A panel of SOAS academic members will assess candidates on academic merit.
- The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your scholarship application.

Scholarship Benefits
The Centre of African Studies, School of African Studies (SOAS) University of London, offers 2 Ph.D. scholarships to African nationals. For PhD candidates: The scholarship covers tuition fees for three years for PhD candidates. However, accommodation and living costs are covered for the first year only.
Successful candidates will also be awarded financial aid to cover two return flights: one during the first year and one for the viva (plus one week’s accommodation around the viva). When you are in years 2 and 3, you will also receive an annual stipend of £5,000 and additional aid covering visa costs, provided receipts are submitted to the Centre of African Studies office.

Additionally, to be considered for the scholarship, an applicant must have an Unconditional offer for a PhD before March 31.
Students are also expected to do fieldwork during their second year at SOAS University of London and write the thesis in their country of origin in their third year.
