Karolinska Institutet commenced operations in 1810 when it was formed as Medico-Chirurgiska Institutet to teach army surgeons in Sweden. KI is renowned for being the single largest home of all academic medical research conducted in Sweden. In 1817, Karolinska was added to the name as a reference to ‘Karoliner,’ one of the soldiers under the Swedish king, Karl XII.
The Institute is a global leader in medicine, boasting the country’s broadest range of education in medicine and health sciences. Since 1901, the Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute has been responsible for selecting Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.
The KI Global Scholarship is designed for outstanding students from different countries to study at the Master’s level in Sweden. The objective is to play a significant role in enhancing human health. The Scholarship, a partly funded scheme, welcomes applications from students seeking to pursue a Master’s program at the Swedish Institute.
Tuition Fees in Sweden
Sweden is one of the countries which offers free education. Citizens of the EU/EEA and those with a permanent Swedish residence permit can study free of charge. However, others who do not fall under this category are required to pay application and tuition fees. Suppose you are a citizen of a country outside of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland. In that case, you may have to pay tuition fees between 8,000 to 15,000 euros.
Eligibility Criteria
Outlined below are the eligibility criteria for the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden;
- Only first-year students are eligible to apply.
- Candidates should have applied to one of KI Global Master’s Programmes starting in 2025
- You must be a tuition fee-paying student (from outside the EU/EEA)
- Candidate should have paid the application fee by February 1

Benefits of Scholarship
Karolinska Institutet offers tuition fee waivers to excellent Master’s students. It awards ten scholarships to successful candidates yearly, spread to all the Global Master’s Programs. The Scholarship only covers the tuition fee (or part of the tuition fee for programs only partially given by Karolinska Institutet).
The student’s travel, living expenses and other costs must be sorted out through other means. The KI scholarship fund only covers tuition fees for students enrolled in a Global Master’s Program at Karolinska Institutet. This means it cannot be used for other studies.
Application Procedure
Interested applicants should;
- Apply for admission to any of your desired Masters programs offered by the Karolinska Institutet.
- Application for admission must be completed between October 15, 2024, and January 15, 2025.
- After securing admission, you will then proceed to apply for the Scholarship.
- Visit the scholarship webpage to start the process.
- The selection process is based on an overall assessment of the applicant’s CV and qualifications submitted via University Admissions.
