The Jefferson Scholars Foundation offers financial support to interested and qualified international students through its National Fellowship Program in the United States of America. Candidates can choose from a wide range of disciplines, such as history, political science, policy studies, law, political economy, communications and media, and sociology.
Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship is a fully funded scholarship for international students to pursue PhD degrees at the University of Virginia, USA. Jefferson judges applicants on the quality of their scholarship and their promise of intellectual and professional leadership.
Participants of this program will be provided with a scholarship worth $25,000 for three years. The program will also give them an office, stack access, inter-library loan privileges, and internet access. That is not all, as the beneficiaries will also have the opportunity to present a paper in Hagley’s seminar series and use Hagley’s discounted scholar’s accommodations.
Tuition Fees in USA
As an international student pursuing academic studies in the United States of America, the tuition fees you are typically expected to pay depend on the type of qualification and institution you choose. However, the average cost of studying at an American higher institution is between $10,000 to $55,000 per academic year.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the National Fellowship, you;
- Must be a Ph.D. candidate who will be completing their dissertation by the conclusion of the Fellowship year or
- Should have outlined a detailed and workable two-year write-up plan that is persuasively documented.
- You should be ready to work with a Mentor to focus on your research expertise.
- Should be ready for focused on-campus residential visits of up to two weeks.
- Willing to participate in mandatory fall and Spring conferences in collaboration with junior and senior scholars
- Must be a part of a workshop with a renowned university press editor to conclude each spring conference.
- Regardless of residency, Fellows are expected to participate in and contribute to the Jefferson Scholars Foundation’s interdisciplinary community.

- Project description of about 1,200 words.
- Research plan of 500 words, maximum
- Network proposal of about 1,200 words, maximum. You will identify scholars whose work is central to your research agenda.
- Op-ed or blog post of about 750 words, maximum. You can adopt a sample of public engagement, for instance, an op-ed or blog post that applies a significant finding from your research to a current public policy problem.
- A short statement of interest in the professional development of 500 words, maximum
- Writing sample (40 pages, maximum) – The selected sample should consist of one chapter from your dissertation with a one-page introduction that situates the chapter in the broader project OR an accepted/published journal article.
- Two letters of recommendation (one from your advisor).
Scholarship Benefits
Candidates selected for the Jefferson Scholars Foundation National Fellowship will be provided with an office, stack access, inter-library loan privileges, and internet access. A stipend of $25,000 will be awarded to a Fellow for the year. Fellows will also have the opportunity to present a paper in Hagley’s seminar series and use Hagley’s discounted scholar accommodations. A dedicated budget for each Fellow pays for network events and activities expenses.
