The Hornby Trust Scholarship is a scheme that awards up to ten fully funded scholarships to academically talented and experienced masters-seeking candidates from around the globe who meet the University of Exeter’s admission criteria for the MEd TESOL Program.
Candidates must be nationals of and work in low—and middle-income countries as defined in the OECD DAC list. The University of Exeter Hornby Trust Scholarship provides coverage for full tuition fees, travel costs, and a generous stipend for accommodation and living expenses.
Exeter, which prioritizes capacity building for English language teaching in low—and middle-income countries, awards Master’s degree scholarships to teachers and related professionals with relevant experience and evidenced potential to impact and enhance the field of English language teaching and learning in their home country.
Tuition Fees
As an international student at the University of Exeter, the tuition fee for an undergraduate program is between £22,300 and £47,500. Those at the postgraduate level typically pay a tuition fee of about £19,800 for full-time studies.
Eligibility Criteria

- The applicant must be a resident of and work in a low—or middle-income country included in the OECD DAC list.
- After their first degree, the applicant must have at least three years of full-time TESOL teaching or related professional experience.
- Candidate should already hold an undergraduate degree (with grades equivalent to UK upper 2nd class honors or higher) or a relevant postgraduate degree.

Application Procedure
- First, submit a regular postgraduate application to the University of Exeter for the MEd TESOL program.
- You will receive an Exeter student number. Upon receipt of your Exeter application, this number will be sent directly to you.
- Only then can you complete and submit your application for a Hornby Scholarship. You will need your Exeter student number to submit your scholarship application.
- Applicants will be notified if they have been shortlisted to attend an interview no later than April 18, 2025.
