Heidelberg University, established in 1386, is located in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It is the oldest university in the country. The higher institution is officially called the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg. It is one of the strongest research universities in Europe.
The Heidelberg University Gates Scholarship, which is currently open for applications, is a fully funded program by the Gates Foundation for students from around the world who want to study at the doctorate level in Germany.
Tuition Fees
Tuition fees for international students from non-European Union and non-European Economic Area are typically required to pay a tuition fee ranging from 1500 euros to 2250 euros per semester for Bachelor’s and consecutive Master’s degree programs at all institutions of higher education in Baden-Württemberg (Germany).
Students who are Germans or from EU and EEA member states and international students with a German university entrance qualification are all exempt from paying these tuition fees at Heidelberg University.
Eligibility Criteria
The Heidelberg University Gates Scholarship requires you to meet the following requirements to be qualified:
- Candidates must have a BSc and MSc or equivalent in a relevant field.
- Candidates must possess effective English communication, both written and verbal.
- Candidates must have experience working solo and as part of a team.
- You must have the ability to problem-solve and design experiments.
- You should be able to work independently after appropriate training.

The Gates Scholarship at Heidelberg University is tuition-free and will offer a PhD salary of 65% TVL-E13 scale worth (€4100 to €6000 gross monthly). Heidelberg University Hospital is also looking to recruit a PhD student for a Gates Foundation-funded project determining the pharmacokinetic properties necessary for insecticide uptake in the major malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae.
The appointee will join the Parasitology Unit in the Centre for Infectious Diseases, Heidelberg, and be affiliated with Prof Carsten Hopf at the Center for Mass Spectrometry and Optical Spectroscopy, Mannheim. As a scholar under the program, you will also work closely with other partners in a consortium for novel insecticide discovery, specifically with Dr. David Hong, University of Liverpool, UK.
