Africa is blessed with brilliant minds, and universities on the continent have produced some great scholars and geniuses who have dominated various fields across the globe.
Booklab24 has collated a list of the top 10 universities in Africa based on research performance and ratings by academic community members worldwide and in the region. According to the USN, here are the ten best universities in Africa, and their rankings from number 10 to the first.
10. Zagazig University
Zagazig University, established in 1974, is number 10 in Africa and sits at 362 on the Best Global Universities ranking. The higher institution has an enrollment rate of over 50,000 and offers courses and programs in several areas of study. ZU also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students, including a library and sports facilities.
9. University of Johannesburg
Founded in 2005, the University of Johannesburg is the 9th in Africa and ranks 357 in the Best Global Universities. With an enrollment range of 25,000 to 29,999 students, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has a selective admission policy based on entrance examinations and students’ past academic records and grades. International students are welcome to apply for any course of study at the 19-year-old South African higher institution.
8. University of Ibadan
Established in 1948, the University of Ibadan is ranked number 8 in Africa and sits at the 350th spot on the Best Global Universities list. It is located in the metropolis of Ibadan, Oyo state, and has an enrollment range of 25,000-29,999 students. This 76-year-old Nigerian higher institution has an acceptance rate range of 40-49%.
7. Mansoura University
Mansoura University, founded in 1972, is located in the urban setting of Mansoura, Dakahlia, Egypt. It is ranked 7th in Africa and 335th among the Best Global Universities.
The institution offers courses and programs such as pre-bachelor’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in several areas of study. The 52-year-old Egyptian university also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students, including a library, housing, sports facilities, study abroad and exchange programs, and administrative services.
6. Al Azhar University
Located in Cairo, Egypt, Al Azhar University has over 50,000 students and is the sixth best in Africa. It is ranked 327th in the Best Global Universities ranking.
5. University of Lagos
The University of Lagos was founded in 1962. It is a non-profit public institution in Lagos, Nigeria, with branch campuses in Idi-Araba and Yaba. It is the fifth-best university in Africa and ranked 323rd on the Best Global Universities list.
UNILAG, as it is fondly called, boasts an enrollment range of between 35,000 and 39,999 students. It offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees. This 62-year-old institution has an acceptance rate range of 10-19%, making it an extremely selective institution.
4. Stellenbosch University
Stellenbosch University, also known as Universiteit Stellenbosch, South Africa, was established in 1918. Its campus is located in the Western Cape. Ranked as the fourth-best higher institution in Africa and number 311 globally, the institution also has branch campuses in Tygerberg, Bellville, and Saldanha. International applicants can apply for enrollment into this 105-year-old South African institution.
3. Cairo University
Established in 1908, Cairo University, located in Giza, is formally affiliated with the Islamic religion. This 116-year-old higher institution is ranked number 3 on the Best Universities in Africa list and 271 in the Best Global Universities ranking.
Cairo University has an enrollment of over 50,000 students and an acceptance rate of 90-99%. It also provides several academic and non-academic facilities and services to students, including a library, housing, sports facilities, financial aid and/or scholarships, study abroad and exchange programs, online courses, and distance learning opportunities, as well as administrative services.
2. University of Witwatersrand
Founded in 1922, the University of the Witwatersrand is situated in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is a very large educational institute with an enrollment of 35,000-39,999 students.
Ranked number 2 among the best universities in Africa, the University of Witwatersrand is also the 264th Best university globally. This 102-year-old coeducational South African higher institution has an acceptance rate of 30-39%.
1. University of Cape Town
The prestigious University of Cape Town tops the list as the Best University in Africa, but it is ranked 116 globally. Established in 1874, UCT is located in the metropolis of Cape Town, South Africa, with an enrollment range of 20,000 to 24,999 students.
