The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship 2025 is a fully funded program created by the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation to empower remarkable individuals from various disciplines and backgrounds with a shared interest in improving Canada and the world. The Trudeau Foundation is a Canadian charity established in 2001 as a living memorial to former Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau by his family, friends, and colleagues.
Through its Scholarship, Fellowship, and Mentorship programs, the charity organization aims to instill in scholars values crucial to their becoming leaders in the areas of service to the community, audacity, and innovation. Applications into the scholarship scheme are currently open for students pursuing doctorate programs in Canada.
Activities For Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholars
During the first year of their term, you should engage in Foundation in-person and digital events, including custom-designed Institutes of Engaged Leadership and Retreats.
A scholar is expected to collectively organize a conference event (Impact Conference) during the second year of the leadership program and present this conference during the third year.
You should take steps, through formal or informal training, if you are not fluently bilingual in both of Canada’s Official Languages (French and English), to improve your proficiency in the Official Language with which they are less familiar.
Ensure you serve the host communities as volunteers: Outside Foundation programming, active Scholars are expected to perform 30 hours of volunteer service or community initiatives each year and report on these activities to the Foundation.
Tuition Fees in Canada
Tuition fees for universities in Canada vary depending on the program and higher institution that a student chooses to study in. The average cost of tuition for international students pursuing undergraduate programs at a Canadian university is around $36,100 per year, while those going for graduate programs are expected to pay about $21,100 per year.
Eligibility Criteria
Below are the guidelines for applicants to be eligible for the 2025 Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship.
- Must be already accepted into or currently studying at a Canadian university
- At the time of application, you must:
- Be in the process of completing a Master’s program (completed no later than summer 2025)
- Be in the first year of a doctoral program.
- Be in your second year of a doctoral program.
- Your field of study should be broadly related to the humanities and social sciences or human sciences and is directly relevant to the future of Canada.
- Your doctorate work must relate to at least one of the Foundation’s four general themes:
- Human Rights and Dignity
- Responsible Citizenship
- Canada and the World
- People and their Natural Environment.
- Be a Canadian or a foreign citizen studying at a Canadian or foreign institution or a non-Canadian (permanent resident of Canada or foreign national) enrolled in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution.
Scholarship Benefits
The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholarship awards up to $50,000 annually for three years to cover tuition and living expenses and an additional $20,000 annually for research, travel, and networking costs.
As a beneficiary, you will also be a member of a vibrant community of Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows, all leaders in their respective disciplines and sectors. Additionally, you will get lifelong membership in the Foundation’s alumni network.
Timeline for Pierre Elliott Trudeau Scholars Program
- September 9, 2024: Application period opens
- November 20, 2024: Deadline for references
- November 25, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. EST: Application deadline
- January 27, 2025: Semi-finalists notified
- February 10–12, 2025: Virtual group interviews
- February 19, 2025: Finalists invited for individual interviews
- March 10–12, 2025: Final interviews
- May 2025: Official announcement of 2025 Scholars

Do not create a new account if you have previously applied for the Trudeau Foundation Scholarships.
Enter the email that you previously used and select “Forgot password.”
Step2: Fill out the application
Step 3: After completing your registration, respond to the questions to create your application for the 2025 Scholarship Competition.
