The McDonnell International Scholarship is a fully funded scheme that offers a generous financial package to support graduate and professional degree studies at Washington University in St. Louis, United States of America.
Under the McDonnell International Scholars Academy, graduate students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds come together to create a dynamic and vibrant community of future leaders. The prestigious graduate fellowship program offers exceptional leadership training, mentorship, professional development, and unique engagement opportunities.
McDonnell Scholars are selected based on their ability to emerge as leaders who are experts in their fields with perspectives that reflect cultural competence. The scholarship is open, and international students are welcome to apply for financial aid following the guidelines.
Tuition Fees
As a graduate student, you will pay $32,250 per semester for full-time study. Typical full-time study is 12 to 18 units. If students enroll in more than 21 units per semester, they will pay additional tuition of $2,688 for each credit unit beyond 21 units. Tuition fees for undergraduates at Washington University in St. Louis for the 2024-2025 academic year are fixed at $64,500.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be admitted to a Washington University doctoral or master’s degree program.
- Applicants must apply separately to both the McDonnell Academy and the university’s doctoral or master’s program.
- Applicants must be a bachelor’s degree holder or higher or plan to earn one before the end of the 2024-25 academic year (July 2025).
- The McDonnell International Scholarship is not available for undergraduate studies.
- Applicants from all countries are welcome. However, priority is given to international graduate candidates who are graduates of one of the Academy’s Partner Universities.

Scholarship Benefits
If selected as a McDonnell Scholar, you will receive both financial and programmatic support, including full tuition and a monthly living stipend, a relocation expense allowance and travel allowance, the opportunity to reside in private, modern cohort housing within walking distance to campus, and; multifaceted instruction, cultural experiences, dedicated mentorship, and an expansive worldwide network of students and alumni.
How to Apply
- Applicants must apply to an eligible Washington University in St. Louis doctoral or master’s degree program.
- Apply for the MCDonell’s International Scholars Academy Fellowship program.
- To apply to the McDonnell Academy, complete the online application as part of your WashU graduate program application. Ensure the following materials are submitted before the application deadline:
- Personal essay
- Short video
- Recommendation letter
