Maastricht University is a public research higher institution in Maastricht, Netherlands, renowned for its cutting-edge academic research and educational innovation. Founded in 1976, it is the second youngest of the 13 Dutch universities and maintains high rankings among young international universities. Every year, Maastricht University awards scholarships to international students to enable them to pursue degree programs in the Netherlands.
The Maastricht University Scholarship program consists of the High Potential Scholarship (funded by the Maastricht University Scholarship Fund) and the NL Scholarship, which is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science in conjunction with Dutch universities and universities of applied sciences.
The UM NL-High Potential Scholarship is open and accepting applications from students outside the European Union (EU/EEA) who have been admitted to a master’s program at Maastricht University for the 2025-2026 academic year. The NL-High Potential Scholarship is a prestigious opportunity designed for exceptionally talented students. It offers 21 full scholarships worth €34,000.
Tuition Fees
Students from EU/EEA generally pay the statutory fee of €4,190 per academic year, while non-EU students pay €15,016 at the university. Applicants who received their previous education in a non-EU/EEA country would have to pay a handling fee of € 100 at the start of the application process for all UM bachelor, master, and bridging programs. Also, note that the tuition fees will be paid for every academic year you are enrolled.
Eligibility Criteria
Candidates applying for the Scholarship must meet the following conditions:
- Hold a nationality outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland, or Suriname, and fulfill the requirements for obtaining a Dutch student visa and residence permit.
- Have no dual nationality from an EU/EEA country or Switzerland.
- Have applied for admission to a full-time master’s program at Maastricht University.
- Meet the specific admission requirement of the UM master’s program to which you applied.
- Not participated or completed a degree-seeking higher education program in the Netherlands. Exchange students are welcome to apply.
- Not be over 35 years of age as of September 1, 2025.
- Have an excellent academic record, with a 7.5 out of 10 or higher GPA.

Scholarship Benefits
25 beneficiaries of the 2025 Maastricht University Scholarship will be selected. They will each get full scholarships of €34,000, including a monthly stipend for each academic year. The amount awarded for living expenses is €15,925 for a 13-month master’s program or €30,625 for 25 months. The fund for health and liability insurance is €700. Tuition fees, visa application costs, and pre-academic training are all fully covered.
Application Procedure
The first step is to register for a master’s program via Studielink. Once you have registered, you will receive a student ID number, which is required for the scholarship application.
Visit the UM portal, complete the scholarship application form, and submit it alongside the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Motivation letter
- Proof of academic excellence (GPA of 7.5 out of 10 or equivalent)
- Personal financial statement
- Reference letter from a professor or employer
- Referee (with contact details)
