Imperial College London is a world-class science, technology, engineering, medicine, and business (STEMB) university in the United Kingdom. It was established in July 1907 and is among the ten best universities in the world. It has an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research.
The aim of the Imperial College President’s PhD Scholarships is to provide up to 50 talented international students with the opportunity to work in the UK within their chosen research field.
High-performing students who strongly desire to pursue a PhD program at Imperial College upon completion of their current program are welcome to apply for the scholarship. It provides full-tuition fee coverage and a generous stipend.
Tuition Fees
Imperial College tuition fees are subject to annual changes and are determined by year of entry, not year of study. Fees are charged at two different rates—the Home rate and the non-home rate. The Home fee set by the United Kingdom Research and Innovation (UKRI) for postgraduate research programs is about £4,786.
Eligibility Criteria
- Talented candidates from Imperial College London, the UK, and worldwide are eligible to apply.
- The scholarship is open to candidates from all nationalities.
- Applicants must be among the highest achievers in their undergraduate program. You must have received or are due to receive a first-class UK degree or equivalent.
- Applicants with a standalone Master’s degree must have achieved a distinction.
- Applicants with degrees from overseas institutions are strongly urged to determine if their scores/grades meet eligibility criteria.
- Applicants must have made contact with a supervisor at Imperial College London.
- Students currently undertaking PhD programs at Imperial College are not eligible to be considered for a President’s PhD Scholarship. The scheme is only open to new PhD applications.
Scholarship Benefits
The 50 scholarships available under the scheme each provide a range of support during the 3.5 years of study, such as total funding for tuition fees, a stipend of £25,150 per year to assist with living expenses, a consumables fund of £2,000 per annum for the first three years of study.
Also, you will be signed up for a program of bespoke opportunities and events delivered by the Graduate School. Successful candidates will have access to the full range of support available to postgraduates at Imperial, including tailored support for disabled and international students and the broader Graduate School program of professional skills courses.
Assessment Criteria
The Faculties and College Selection Panel usually assess the applicants based on the following criteria:
- Academic Excellence – as demonstrated by:
- a. past academic results
- b. transcripts
- c. relative class position
- d. awards
- e. distinctions
- Research Potential – as demonstrated by:
- a. the candidate’s research experience to date
- b. their interest in discovery
- c. the research plan and its potential contribution as described in their research proposal
- d. the departmental statement, which also reflects on performance at the interview
Application Procedure
- Before starting the application, contact a supervisor in an academic department at Imperial College London who has agreed to supervise your research project.
- There’s no specific application form.
- Submit your application for admission to study at Imperial College through the online admissions system..
- Your department will put you forward for the scholarship based on academic merit and potential.
Applications will be reviewed in the stages below:
- The department to which candidates have applied will review candidates who have met or are predicted to meet the eligibility requirements.
- Departments will select a shortlist of the best candidates to present to the Imperial College Selection Panel for scholarship consideration.
- Successful candidates will receive written confirmation of their selection for the President’s PhD Scholarship.
- Any offer of a PhD place will be conditional on a final interview by the department.
