The University of Tokyo was founded in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. In 1886, it was changed to Imperial University and later renamed Tokyo Imperial University to distinguish it from other imperial universities. This prestigious research institution is renowned for focusing on humanities, social, and natural sciences.
The Amgen Scholars Program is designed to provide an opportunity for motivated and talented undergraduate students worldwide to experience scientific research at the University of Tokyo in Japan.
This scholarship targets students from Japan, Asia, and other nations committed to pursuing a biology or related sciences career and looking to continue graduate studies. The recipients will undertake eight weeks of biomedical research experience in the basic and translational sciences.
During the program, each student will be placed in a laboratory, each led by a leading scholar belonging to one of the five participating graduate schools/institutes of the university:
Tuition Fees
The University of Tokyo’s tuition fees for bachelor’s degree programs in the academic year are ¥642,960. This amount is paid by both domestic and international students newly enrolling in undergraduate programs at the higher institution.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must;
- Be attending colleges or universities across the Asia region that award a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent)
- Have completed their first year of undergraduate study at the time the summer program begins (At the minimum)
- Be enrolled as undergraduate students at universities in Asia that award a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent).
- Have completed at least their first year of undergraduate studies before the program begins.
- Plan to return to their undergraduate studies for at least one semester or quarter post-program.
- Demonstrate a solid academic performance.
- Have an interest in pursuing a Ph.D.
- Possess an excellent working knowledge of English, evidenced by a minimum TOEFL (iBT) score of 72 or
- Possess an IELTS band score of 5.5 or equivalent English proficiency tests for non-native speakers.
Scholarship Benefits
The Amgen Scholars Program recipients will receive a grant that covers the duration of the program, accommodation, and economy-class airfare to Tokyo (or round-trip train tickets for domestic students).
Also, a stipend of 270,000 JPY will be offered to the student, which can be used for personal expenses such as food and travel within Japan. Beneficiaries will have access to world-class laboratories and facilities at the University of Tokyo and will participate in special seminars, cultural events, excursions, etc.

- Latest CV (PDF, max 500 words)
- Two recommendation letters submitted directly by referees.
- Complete and Submit Application: You can save and continue your application as needed, but once it is submitted, you cannot make any changes.
Applications will be screened from February to mid-March 2025, and shortlisted candidates will be notified through the TAO portal. Successful applicants will join a program that advances their research capabilities and expands their global scientific network.
