When international students think of applying for undergraduate or graduate programs in the United Kingdom, many wonder which universities offer scholarships in their field of study. Almost every higher institution in the UK awards scholarships to students from Africa, Asia, and other parts of the world, but while some are fully funded, others come with partial funding.
This article by Booklab24 has collated some of the renowned universities that support international students with tuition fees, accommodation charges, health insurance, travel allowance, living expenses, and other related costs.
There is a wide range of scholarships for bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students in the UK, and we have painstakingly highlighted nine universities that provide full and partial funding to international students.
1. University of Bristol Think Big Scholarship
The University of Bristol offers scholarships to international students under the Think Big Scholarship. The institution invests £500,000 to help the brightest and best candidates have an opportunity to secure a degree. Think Big Undergraduate scholarships and Think Big Postgraduate scholarships are available for all courses at Bristol University and provide the recipient with funds between £6,500 to £26,000, which can be used as fee waivers towards tuition fees.
Eligibility
You are eligible for the scholarship at the University of Bristol if you are an overseas/international student applying to start any full-time undergraduate course (excluding Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Science) beginning in September 2024.
How to apply for the University of Bristol Think Big Scholarship
Visit the University portal and apply using the international scholarships online application form. As an international student, you don’t need to have received an offer to study before submitting an international scholarship application.
2. University of Dundee Global Excellence Scholarships
University of Dundee Global Excellence Scholarships is a partly funded scholarship awarded for Postgraduate studies. International students from any country are eligible to join the application process. Global Excellence Postgraduate Taught Scholarship will provide £5,000 for one year only.
Eligibility
You must have been awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Africa Scholarship or Global Excellence Scholarship to be considered for a scholarship at the University of Dundee.
You should currently reside in an African country and hold International Fee Status as determined by the University of Dundee.
3. University of Cambridge Gates Scholarship
The Gates Cambridge Scholarship of the University of Cambridge is a fully funded scholarship. It benefits international students applying for master’s and PhD studies. Cambridge provides a £17,500 stipend per annum, health insurance, academic development funding up to £2,000, and a family allowance up to £10,120.
Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded to foreign applicants with outstanding academic performance who want to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any course at the university. This scholarship covers the total cost of studying at Cambridge and provides additional discretionary funding.
How to apply
Candidates should visit the University’s Graduate Application Portal and submit their application for admission and funding.
In the application, you will provide all the details about yourself, such as your academic background, plans, and suitability for the proposed course. Applicants are also asked for a statement of purpose.
Gates Cambridge requires PhD applicants only to submit a research proposal as part of their funding application.
Applicants must present two academic references for admission and arrange for someone to submit a reference stating how they meet the scholarship’s criteria.
4. Simmons University Kotzen Scholarships
Simmons University Kotzen Scholarships are offered for only undergraduate studies (Bachelor’s degree). This fully funded scholarship for international students covers full tuition, mandatory fees, and accommodation.
Eligibility Criteria
Students should have a minimum of 28 scores on the Simmons test on the ACT. Also, it is mandatory to score 1300 or above on the SAT.
Those from countries where English is not the first language must submit English proficiency test scores. TOEFL SAT or ACT are accepted at Simmons University.
To be eligible for the Simmons University scholarship, students must have a 3.50 GPA or above from their previous degree.
5. Imperial College London
Imperial College London offers a fully funded PhD Scholarship for international students. The institution’s funding covers tuition fees and an annual tax-free contribution to maintenance costs of £16,553. It awards up to 10 fully funded scholarships to candidates each year.
6. University of Oxford Clarendon Scholarship Fund
The University of Oxford Clarendon Scholarships cover tuition and college fees in full and provide a generous grant for living expenses. This prestigious graduate scholarship scheme offers around 140 new scholarships every year to eligible graduate applicants (including international students).
Eligibility Criteria:
The University of Oxford awards the scholarship on the basis of academic excellence and potential across all degree-bearing subjects at the graduate level. Scholarships are tenable in all subject areas and open to candidates applying for a new master’s or DPhil course by the January admissions deadline.
7. University of Sussex Chancellor’s International Scholarships
The University of Sussex Chancellor’s International Scholarships, which are available in the majority of Sussex Schools, offer 50 percent off tuition fees to international students for one year. The scholarships are awarded based on stellar academic performance and potential to candidates from non-EU countries eligible for full-time Postgraduate degrees at the University.
How to apply for Chancellor’s International Scholarships
To apply for the University of Sussex Chancellor’s International Scholarships, an international student must have received an offer of a place on a full-time postgraduate taught master’s degree course. You can then visit the University’s website and submit an online scholarship application form before the scholarship deadline.
8. University of West England Chancellor’s Scholarships
The Chancellor’s Scholarships, offered by the University of the West of England, Bristol, offer more than £100,000 worth of scholarships for international students each year. Recipients of this program are required to undertake an internship working within the International Development Office and other departments. The Chancellor’s scholarship covers the full tuition fees for one academic year.
Eligibility:
You should be a new student at the University of the West of England, Bristol, with no previous UK study.
An applicant should hold an unconditional or conditional offer where IELTS or equivalent English language is the only condition.
9 University of Nottingham Developing Solutions Scholarships
The University of Nottingham Developing Solutions Scholarships are designed for international students from Africa, India, or one of the developing countries of the Commonwealth who apply for a master’s degree. They specifically request those who make a difference in the development of their home country. The higher institution offers about 105 scholarships each year. Thirty of those scholarships will cover the full tuition fee, while 75 will cover 50% of the tuition fee.
