However, this article focuses on highlighting the ten best higher institutions in France that offer quality education and international exchange programs.
Booklab24 has outlined the best-ranked universities in France, which have been evaluated based on their research performance and ratings by members of the academic community worldwide and within Europe.
1. Paris Sciences et Lettres – PSL Research University Paris
Science and Letters of Paris—P.S.L. Research University Paris is made up of 25 universities and research centers in the greater Paris area. Researchers from the university have been awarded 28 Nobel Prizes in physics, chemistry, literature, physiology, medicine, and economics.
The University was founded in April 2010 after the merger of five major French institutions: École Normale Supérieure, Collège de France, Paris Observatory, Chimy Paris Polytechnique, and ESPCI Paris Polytechnique. The institutions under the university’s umbrella are a mix of old and new institutions founded during the Enlightenment.
2. Université Paris-Saclay
The University of Paris, established in 2019, is named Université Paris-Saclay. It is part of the Paris-Saclay project, which brings together nine universities and a business cluster in a research-intensive academic campus.
Paris-Saclay offers a wide range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs in science, engineering, life sciences, health sciences, social sciences, and humanities.
3. Sorbonne University
Sorbonne University has several campuses in Paris and a satellite campus in Abu Dhabi. It has three faculties: Humanities, Natural Sciences, and Medicine. Law is taught at Panthéon-Assas University.
The university has eight notable scientific collections, some of which are accessible to researchers and some to the public, such as the mineralogy, paleontology, and zoology collections.
4. Université Paris Cité
The University of Paris Cité is a very young university, having only been founded in 2019. It has 14 campuses and research facilities in different parts of Paris, including the historic Latin Quarter. It was founded by the merger of the University of Paris Diderot, the University of Paris Descartes, and the Paris Institute of Geophysics.
The university offers courses across academic disciplines, including arts, humanities, languages, social sciences, business, science and technology, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, and nursing.
5. Aix-Marseille Universite
Aix-Marseille University (University of Aix-Marseille ) is a public research university that dates back to 1409. It was established in its current form on January 1, 2012, through the merger of the University of Provence, the University of the Mediterranean, and the Paul Cézanne University.
The university has five campuses in Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. It has 19 faculties and 12 doctoral programs and offers around 600 courses in all disciplines, including arts, literature, social sciences, natural sciences, and technology.
A.M.U. has many notable alumni and faculty members in the fields of law, politics, business, economics, and literature. B.J.M. G. Le Clezio, 2008 Nobel Prize winner in literature.
6. Institut Polytechnique de Paris
According to data from Times Higher Education, about 35% of Polytechnique de Paris students are international, with 88 different nationalities represented on campus. The school has ten faculties, including Biology, Chemistry and Processes, Economics, Mathematics, Humanities, Arts, Literature, and Languages.
Polytechnique de Paris is a public university and research institute founded by merging five French technical schools, Télécom SudParis. The admission process is very selective.
7. Universite de Montpellier
The University of Montpellier was founded in 1289, following Pope Nicholas IV’s order to unite the schools of Montpellier into a university.
Since 1970, this higher institution has been divided into the University of Montpellier I, with the faculties of Medicine, Law, and Economics; the University of Montpellier II, with the faculties of Science and Engineering; and the University Paul Valery Montpellier III; with the faculties of Social Sciences. Humanities and Liberal Arts are separate.
The University of Montpellier currently consists of nine faculties, plus three technical institutes, three institutes in the fields of administration and economics, and two technical schools. It is the sixth-largest university in France.
8. Universite Grenoble Alpes
Université Grenoble Alpes was founded in 1339 with the merger of the University of Grenoble Alpes, the Grenoble Polytechnique Institute, the Grenoble Institute of Political Studies, and the Grenoble School of Architecture.
There are around 59,000 students, 10,000 of whom are from abroad and represent 160 nationalities. The university has partnerships with more than 1,000 universities around the world and is known for its research and teaching in natural sciences and engineering.
Students can study from bachelor’s to doctoral level. Many programs are available in English, including architecture, engineering, law, economics, political science, and computer science.
9. Universite de Bordeaux
The University of Bordeaux is ranked among the best universities in France for the quality of its academic courses, research, and knowledge transfer programs. It hosts 54,000 students, of which around 2,000 are doctoral students, and 7,200 are international students. 150 bachelor’s degree programs (including 250 Master’s degree programs (professional) and 250 Master’s degree programs) are offered in four main scientific fields.
The university maintains special exchange programs with more than 60 countries worldwide.
10. Universite Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier
Diverse laboratories and world-class teaching in science, health, sports, technology, and engineering have secured the university’s scientific reputation for almost 50 years. It is one of the leading universities in the world.
