When discussing Asian countries offering the best education quality, the conversation will be incomplete if China is not mentioned among the top 3. The competition among universities in the country to produce the best graduates and scholars is so stiff that there are no less than 15 higher institutions in China that are on the global 100 best universities ranking.
Some highly rated universities are ranked as the best based on programs and policies introduced over the years, and we at Booklab24 will outline that in this article, which has been collated from US News.
1. Tsinghua University
Tsinghua University, located in northwest Beijing, is ranked first on the list of Best Universities in China and 16th in the Best Global Universities. It is a public institution established in 1911. Mandarin, also called Chinese, is the primary teaching language, though some graduate degree programs are offered in English.
Tuition costs at Tsinghua University vary by degree program and language of instruction. The institution’s international students come from more than 100 countries, most of them from Asia.
Numerous schools and departments offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate programs in the fields of science, engineering, literature, arts, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education, and medicine.
2. Peking University
Peking University is the second-best university in China and ranks 31st in the Best Global Universities ranking. Founded in 1898, its main campus, known as Yan Yuan, is located in the Haidian District, Beijing, China. University housing is available for both undergraduate and graduate students. Tuition costs are higher for international students and vary by subject, with science subjects costing more.
PKU’s academic departments focus on the humanities, social sciences, and science disciplines. Undergraduates are instructed in Chinese, and graduate-level programs are taught in either Chinese or English. Peking University has over 33,064 students, and the number of international students is around 4,544.
3. Zhejiang University
Zhejiang University traces its roots back to 1897. It is the third Best University in China and the 51st Best Global University. The university is situated in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province. The total number of students is around 47,000, half of whom study at the undergraduate level.
The higher institution offers programs in the following disciplines: engineering, the humanities, and medicine. There are different doctorate programs, 300 master’s programs, and 120 undergraduate programs available for students to choose from. Mandarin (Chinese) is a primary language of instruction. However, over a dozen master’s degree programs are taught in English. International students at Zhejiang University are about 7,775, while the total number of students is around 48,169.
4. Shanghai Jiao Tong University
The fourth-best university in China, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, is 54th in the Best Global Universities ranking. It boasts 38,472 students, while the international students number about 3,596.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a major research university located in Shanghai, with 31 schools/departments, 31 research institutions, 13 affiliated hospitals, two affiliated medical research institutes, 20 directly affiliated units, and five directly affiliated enterprises. Courses available at the institution include mechanical engineering, physics, astronomy, humanities, media and design, international and public affairs, and medicine, among others.
One notable aspect of Shanghai Jiao Tong University is that the International Student Union hosts a range of events, volunteering projects, and activities to help students from around the world connect with each other and the community.
5. University of Chinese Academy of Sciences
The University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) is an innovative university ranked 69th in the Best Global Universities rankings. It is known for integrating scientific research and education, with a primary focus on graduate education.
According to a 2022 report, UCAS boasts about 59,958 postgraduate students on campus, 1,658 undergraduates, and 1,957 international students (including 1,292 doctoral students).
Established in 1978, UCAS granted the first PhD degree in science, the first PhD degree in engineering, and the first PhD degree to a female student. It is one of the few universities authorized to grant all master’s and doctoral degrees in the scientific disciplines and 80% of all degrees in the engineering disciplines.
6. University of Science & Technology of China
The University of Science and Technology of China is ranked 6th on the list of best universities in China and 82nd among the best global universities. It was founded in 1958 by the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Around 1.5 percent of the population is made up of international students. Many foreign students at the university receive financial support from one of three sources: the USTC Scholarship, the Chinese Government Scholarship, or a fellowship offered by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences.
USTC runs a research program for undergraduates at university labs and Chinese Academy of Sciences research institutes, of which over 70 percent of bachelor’s degree students participate.
7. Fudan University
Fudan University is ranked 7th among the best universities in China. Its campus is located in Shanghai, China, and it is spread across four sites: the Handan, Jiangwan, Fenglin, and Zhangjiang campuses. This public institution, founded in 1905, also clinches the 85th spot in the Best Global Universities ranking.
Fudan University offers around 70 bachelor’s degree programs, about 250 master’s degree programs, and at least 150 doctoral programs. The university’s academic calendar is semester-based, and undergraduate programs are structured according to a liberal arts core curriculum. Tuition costs are higher for international students than for Chinese students. Fudan’s Undergraduate Research Program supports around 700 research works annually.
8. Nanjing University
Nanjing University (NJU), founded in 1902, is the 8th best in China and number 98 in the Best Global Universities ranking. Located in the old capital city of Nanjing, it is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions of higher learning in China. In 1951, NJU evolved from Sanjiang Normal School and integrated with Jinling University, established in 1888.
Nanjing was one of the first top universities to be selected by the Central Government of China for prioritized support under the “211 Project” and “985 Project.” It is a member of the C9 League (an alliance of nine elite universities in China) and is nationally known for its outstanding faculty, coordinated disciplines, and excellent research.
9. Huazhong University of Science & Technology
Huazhong University of Science & Technology is ranked 9th among the Best Universities in China and 100th in the Best Global Universities ranking. It is a public university located in Wuhan, Hubei, Central China, and affiliated with the Ministry of Education of China. Huazhong University is among the first higher institutions to join the national “211 Project” and “985 Project.”
HUST is home to more than 5,000 international students from more than 130 countries and districts. The university offers 95 undergraduate programs, 224 master programs, 183 doctoral programs, and 35 post-doctoral research centers, including four undergraduate programs, 81 master’s, and 87 doctoral programs taught in English.
10. Sun Yat-Sen University
This is 10th among the best universities in China and number 106 in the ranking of best global universities. Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, was established in 1924 and named after Sun Yat-sen, a revolutionary and the founder of the Republic of China. The university’s main campus is in Haizhu, Guangzhou, inheriting the campus from the former Lingnan University (established in 1888). The university, with affiliations to the Ministry of Education, has five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals.
The Ministry of Education, SASTIND, and the Guangdong Provincial Government co-fund it. This higher institution is also part of Project 211, Project 985, and the Double First-Class Construction.
